I have tried my best to complete the template based on John Lye’s “Critical Analysis of Poetry”, focusing mainly on the point of view, the situation and meaning, and language and diction and last but not least, my personal response.

Firstly, I shall talk about the point of view of the persona in this poem. The persona is probably one of the soldiers fighting in the war at that time. It is evident from several lines throughout the poem, such as “my heart is pumping adrenaline through all of my veins”; “I run as fast as I can through the lead rain” and "I kept pulling the trigger”. This shows that the persona had experienced the war first-hand. Writing from a soldier's POV, his views on this matter should be more reliable than those who have not. The persona is trying to voice out his helplessness desperately as a solider so as to gain sympathy from the readers. The poet describes the horrors and terrors of war through the persona’s eyes to make things sound more realistic and credible, thus enabling him to convey his intended message to his audience.

Secondly, I shall talk about the situation and meaning of the poem. This is war poetry; hence the poem is about war times, in which poets express their views, both positive and negative, towards war. In this case, the poem depicts a team of soldiers arriving at the battlefield to fight their enemies, in which the persona, one of the soldiers in the war, expresses his feelings for war; his reluctance and his helplessness. These soldiers cannot back out, as they had to “leave this bird whether they liked it or not” and their only chance of survival was to “keep pulling the trigger and reloading and pulling”. It has become similar to the wild in which only the strongest survive. This helps to create a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, in which the soldiers were being “forced to their deaths” and there was not much hope for them. By writing this poem and describing war as horrifying and hopeless, the poet is probably trying to tell his audience that war is a bad and horrible thing that should be avoided at all costs. At the same time, there is also internal conflict within the persona as he tries to justify and forget his actions but fails to keep it out of his mind.

Thirdly, I shall attempt to identify the language and diction used in the poem and their intended effect. The poet makes good use of rhythm as the last word of every two lines will rhyme. Some of the examples are “sons, guns”, “blood, mud”, “drink, think”. The poet uses this to get his idea across to his audience in a sing-song and musical manner for the audience to better understand and enjoy the poem while hinting at serious issues like the cruelty of war. Furthermore, links can also be drawn between the two words. For example, “sons and guns” suggests that every son was carrying a gun marching into the battlefield to their deaths, while “blood and mud” might suggest that the war was so bloody that so much blood was on the ground that no one could differentiate which was blood and which was mud.

Lastly, I shall write down my personal response. I found this poem enjoyable as it sheds out on the darkness of war. The poet makes good use of puns and rhyme to catch the reader’s attention and places emphasize on the words. His vivid description and informal tone allows me to better visualize the progress of the situation; first they left the plane, then the shooting began, and then the soldier’s reflections. This progress of the situation helps us to understand the situation at that time and enable us to put ourselves in their shoes. The poet also makes the poem more realistic and credible by adding in informal orders used in the army and viewing things from many perspective; what “they” were doing, what “we”, the soldiers were doing, and finally, what “I”, the persona was thinking. Unlike the media which often portrays war in a very nice and courageous thing, this poem offers an alternative view which is contrary to what people think. Now, people will think twice before coming to a conclusion that war is good and respectable. This poem is very organized and is able to convey its message clearly to its audience effectively; hence I feel this is a good war poetry that deserves to be read by everyone.

We Slept With Our Boots On

They unloaded the dead and maimed right before our eyes
They washed out the blood, we loaded our ruck’s and then took to the skies
Over the mountains, villages, and valleys we flew
Where we would land we had not a clue
Bullets are flying, the LZ is hot
We’re leaving this bird whether we like it or not
30 seconds they yelled, Lock N Load and grab your ****
Get ready to go and make it quick
My heart is pumping adrenalin through all of my veins
I run as fast as I can through the lead rain
The noise is tremendous, terror I can’t define
The only reason I survived that day was divine
I kept pulling the trigger and reloading and pulling some more
You do what you have to do, with that I will say no more
We fought from the valleys to the mountain peaks
From house to cave, to car to creek
Dirty and tired and hungry and scared
We slept with our boots on so we were always prepared
Those majestic mountains so steep, so high they kiss the skies
The Hindu Kush has changed so many lives
Up the mountains with heavy loads we trod
Who knew hell was so close to God
Beauty and terror are a strong mixed drink
So we drank it like drunkards and tried not to think
Good men and bad men, Mothers lost son’s
Everyone loses their innocence when they carry guns
Washed in the blood, and baptized by fire
I will never forget those who were called higher
They say blood is thicker than water, well lead is thicker than blood
Brothers aren’t born they’re earned. In the poppy fields, the tears, and the mud
And when I get to heaven to Saint Peter I will tell
Another Paratrooper reporting for duty sir, I spent my time in hell
by Steve Carlsen

Background
The poet of this poem above is named Steve Carlsen. He was born and lived in Dowagiac Michigan. He joined the United States Army in October 2000, where he attended the Infantry Basic Training and Airborne School in Ft. Benning Georgia. He then reported to D Company 1st battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment and was in the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg North Carolina. Following, Carlsen was deployed to Kosovo in November 2001 as part of peace keeping operations and carried out combat operations in Afghanistan in December 2002. In the end he discharged from the Army in 2003. He currently attends Southwestern Michigan College where his professor, Dr Michael Collins challenged him to write about his experiences. This poem ("We Slept With Our Boots On") is a product of his experiences of war.

Introduction
The poem was cast at a raid created by the persona and his comrades. They were carrying out combat operations in Afghanistan in December 2002, where they were flying on a plane to a place they "had not a clue". Soldiers making a raid on enemy territory will definitely face resistance from the enemy, thus creating an external conflict whereby both sides try hard to eliminate the other side. The first 2 lines of the poem tells us that the soldier emptied the injured and dead soldiers out of the plane and put the author's paratrooper platoon in it. Then, they were ungraciously and unwillingly dropped right smack in the middle of the fierce battefield, the persona worried and frightened. They sprinted for cover from the deafening bullets, horrified, shooting continuously. They fought on all sorts of terrain, tired and frightened, making sure they were always prepared. It was as if they were in hell but they blocked this thought from their minds. The persona feels that fighting in a war and shooting a gun changes a person forever; no longer is he innocent but battle-scarred, witnessing countless deaths and agony.

Conflict
There are two types of conflict in his poem - Physical and Psychological.

Firstly, the persona was fighting enemies on the front line to capture enemy territory. This inevitably leads to shooting and killing, which are clearly shown. The persona states that "Bullets are flying" and he is constantly shooting, "I kept pulling the trigger". This shows that the persona faces physical obstacles (enemies) which he has to gun down.

Secondly, i can infer that the persona was feeling rather worried and frightened, with his "heart pumping adrenalin through his veins". Furthermore, He uses profanities, emphasizing his sorry state being on the battlefield, with "terror he can’t define". Evidently, he is freaked out by the carnage caused by war, whereby "hell was so close to God".

Climax
The climax was created when the fighting had began in an abrupt manner, without warning the poet was told to aboard the plane and fight their enemies. Amongst the fighting, readers will be compelled towards the poem, sympathetic of the persona and hope for the safety of him and his comrades.

Write a diary entry for a major character of the novel. (Mrs Dubose)

Dear diary,
Today is a the day. Finally i move on in kicking my addiction for morphine. Wow! Jem really is a big help. He's anger turned out to be good for me, it was because he destroyed my lawn, Atticus made him do reading for me. Lady luck is with me for this moment. Thank god. Little did he know, Atticus was using him to prolong or extend the time in which she needed to take the morphine to numb the pain. In other words, Jem's readings took my mind off the clock, as well as the pain. I am set off to do something that may seem unnecessary to others, in the course of kicking the old habit. I will go through cold turkey and withdrawal symptoms, however i will persist on. I wish to die with dignity and be “not beholden to drugs”. I will do it! Yes i can!

Lovee,
Me.

b. Write a poem on the Tom Robinson Trial / life in Maycomb/ any other incident.

I look at you, you biased bitch.
How could you pronounce him guilty?
I find a stone and throw it
hard at your face.
How can you not be fair?
I shed tears for Tom, i will have justice.
I will have my way.

So this is my poem about my feelings towards the Tom Robinson Trial. It is not justified, and i really hope it would not have turned out that way.

Heyyo! In school, i am studying this piece of amazing literature, "To Kill a Mocking Bird". It is an interesting book which is so good, it litterally brings you back to the time of around the 1960s. You are transported back to the little town of Alabama, and you get to read it all in different versions, to your preference.

Apparently, the version i liked and read was the play version. Shorter, yet harder to understand. It proved a challenge to me, since it was a new piece of context given to me. And i loved it! It was exciting, and i loved the way it was written. It was like a whole piece of dialogue, including certain actions like how the characters were to act. However, it was horrible news to know that Mrs Raj said i read the "WRONG BOOK", i have to read the other one. Hais, nothing is wrong! Its different.

Well a little summary of the story :
~ The book is a coming-of-age story of a girl named Scout and her brother, Jem. Through their neighbours and the example of their father, they grow to understand that the world isn't always fair and that prejudice is a very real aspect of their world no matter how subtle it seems.

Scout and Jem's father, Atticus, is a respected and upstanding lawyer in small Maycomb County. When he takes on a case that pits innocent, black Tom Robinson against two dishonest white people, Atticus knows that he will lose, but he has to defend the man or he can't live with himself. The case is the biggest thing to hit Maycomb County in years and it turns the whole town against Atticus, or so it seems.
Scout and Jem are forced to bear the insult against their father and watch with shock and disillusionment as their fellow townspeople convict an obviously innocent man because of his race. The only real enemy that Atticus made during the case was Bob Ewell, the trashy white man who accused Tom Robinson of raping his daughter. In actual fact, it was vice versa.

The summer when Scout was six and Jem was ten, they met Dill, a little boy who spent the summer with his aunt who lived next door to the Finches. Dill and Jem become obsessed with the idea of making Boo Radley, the neighborhood recluse, come out of his home. They go through plan after plan, but nothing draws him out. However, these brushes with the neighborhood ghost result in a tentative friendship over time and soon the Finch children realize that Boo Radley deserves to live in peace, so they leave him alone.

Tom Robinson is sent to a work prison to await another trial, but before Atticus can get him to court again, Tom is shot for trying to escape the prison. It seems that the case is finally over and life returns to normal until Halloween night. On the way home from a pageant, Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout in the darkness. After Jem's arm is badly broken, their ghostly neighbor, Boo Radley, rescues Scout and her brother. In order to protect Boo's privacy, the sheriff decides that Bob Ewell fell on his own knife while he was struggling with Jem. Boo Radley returns home never to be seen again.

Through the events of those two years, Scout learns that no matter their differences or peculiarities, the people of Maycomb and of Maycomb County are all people. No one is lesser or better than anyone else because they're all people. She realizes that once you get to know them, most people are good and kind no matter what they seem like on the outside. ~

Yeah well hope my post doesn't bore you too much! Yeah, so i hope you come back to my blog and visit more often. Also, go to my brothers' blogs too!
